Viklarbo Chamber Ensemble

Wendy Prober has performed throughout the United States and Israel as a critically acclaimed chamber musician and soloist.  She is the founding pianist of the award-winning Viklarbo Chamber Ensemble, and has served as Artist-in-Residence at Loyola Marymount University, the prestigious USC Composition Department, “Sundays Live” at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Montgomery Arts House for Music and Architecture (MAHMA), as well as the popular Los Angeles based, SPaCE Salon.” Ms. Prober earned a B.M. at Northwestern University where she studied with Robert Weirich, and a M.M. at USC where she studied with John Perry. Highly sought after as an expert in the field of new music, Prober recorded Grammy nominated composer Morton Lauridsen’s “Cuatro Canciones” on the RCM label.  She has taught on the faculties of Loyola Marymount University, the University of Judaism, the Omaha Conservatory of Music Summer Institute, and was the Executive Director of the Los Angeles Jewish Symphony, where she remains on the Board of Directors. Ms. Prober has been awarded multiple grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the California Arts Commission, and the Utah Performing Arts Tour.

Working closely with Maria Newman, she has premiered and recorded dozens of the composer’s works for solo and duo piano, instrumental sonatas, and chamber music.  American Record Guide writes about her recording of Newman’s Maskil Piano Sonata, “I can’t imagine a more committed or convincing performance.” Last season she performed a weeklong residency on the music of Newman at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music.

Ms. Prober is Principal Pianist of the Malibu Coast Silent Film Orchestra, whose recent performances include the historic Private Theatre of Hearst Castle and the San Luis Obispo International Film Festival, and whose many recorded performances of music for silent film are heard regularly on such broadcast networks as Turner Classic Movies.  Prober is the Artistic Director of SPaCE Salons in Tarzana, California and Prober holds the Herbert Donaldson Piano Chair at the Montgomery Arts House of Music and Architecture in Malibu, California.

Newman’s compositions enjoy an active musical life performed regularly by many of the world’s most fascinating musicians, including New York Philharmonic Principal Violist Cynthia Phelps, Violinist Brian Lewis, Cellist Andrew Shulman, the Los Angeles Mozart Orchestra, Omaha Symphony, the Britt Festival, among many others.  For a complete list of performances, visit ​www.marianewmanmusic.com.

Newman was born into one of the most famous and influential musical families in Hollywood. She is the youngest daughter of 9-time Academy Award-winning film composer, Alfred Newman, who was the celebrated conductor of the famed Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. Maria Newman was educated at Yale University,and the Eastman School of Music. Ms. Newman has collaborated as soloist in concert with actor Pierce Brosnan, Billy Crystal, Paul Reiser, Shelley Long, and Daniel Stern, Michael Crawford, and has had the great honor of performing her original works as soloist at the United States Capitol Building Complex on Capitol Hill in Washington D.C., headlining a Special Event representing the highly debated Victim’s Rights Bill. 

A bold and versatile performer in her role as violinist and violist, Maria Newman has concertized around the world as a soloist, recitalist, and as a member of the Malibu Coast String Quartet,  and the Viklarbo Chamber Ensemble. As a concert soloist, Newman has premiered many new works for violin and viola (including many of her own) in the United States’ and Europe’s most celebrated concert halls, and was the critically acclaimed viola soloist for the Grammy Award-winning album, Symphonic Hollywood, in a performance of Miklos Rozsa’s Viola Concerto with the Nuremberg Symphony. Newman was violin soloist in the critically acclaimed American Premiere performances of Rozsa's Concerto for Violin and Orchestra. 

Ms. Newman currently serves as Conductor and Music Director of the Westwood Master Choir, Madrigals and Chamber Orchestra at Westwood Presbyterian Church in Los Angeles, where she regularly premieres her new compositions. As Composer-in-Residence at the Montgomery Arts House for Music and Architecture (MAHMA), a modern craftsman venue in Malibu, California, designed by Eric Lloyd Wright of the Frank Lloyd Wright family, Newman participates in dozens of concerts annually in this venue alone.
