Composers find inspiration in many forms--poetry, a good story, or simply, an emotion. In Fall Fairy Tales and Fiddling, we'll provide the stories and texts for some of the music, for the rest, just let your imagination roam free and make up your own! Robert Schumann's passion for romantic novels and poetry influenced his work with their evocative titles and his Fairy Tales here are no exception.Aaron Copland's Duo evokes the wide American vistas and a cowboy's saturday night hoedown. Frank Bridge's Three Songs for mezzo, viola and piano contemplate the loss of a loved one while Maria Newman's poignant (and often hilarious) song cycle Trail of Years are songs of experience and maturation on poems of Louis Moss Montgomery, the composer's grandmother and Poet Laureate of the State of Mississippi. We round out the program with songs of Leonard Bernstein-Wendy's tender "Build My House" from Peter Pan - and the sublime and uplifting "Simple Song" from MASS-celebrating the centennial of this consummate American composer's birth.
We hope that you join us for a beautiful
evening of music and stories!
